Ways to Save Money Around Campus This Year

Ways to Save Money Around Campus This Year

While you can’t do much about the cost of tuition, there are ways to save money around campus this year. Whether you opt for used textbooks or get a mini fridge for your dorm room, you can make your money go further.

Buy Used Books

Whenever possible, you want to buy used textbooks. If you get to your campus bookstore as soon as books are available for the new semester, you can find a good selection of used editions. This can save you so much money. Another great tip is to look for books that are being sold be fellow students. These can sometimes be even cheaper than the bookstore’s used books.

Make Your Own Snack Packs

Campus vending machines are insanely overpriced. Go to your local discount department store and stock up on your favorite snacks. You can find snack packs or you can buy larger packages (usually much cheaper) and portion them out into zip top bags. This will save you so much money.

Store Dry Meals in Your Room

If you don’t have a good meal plan, or want to make your meal plan go further, store soup, chili, canned pasta, and other foods that can be easily heated in a microwave. This allows you to enjoy a hot meal without having to pay for the expensive meal in the cafeteria.

Get a Mini Fridge

A mini fridge will allow you many more cooking options and to keep drinks cold. Again, vending machines can be very overpriced. With a mini fridge, you can have lots of drinks on hand for a fraction of what you’d pay at the vending machine.

Take Advantage of the Campus Gym

If you want to stay in shape, don’t head off campus. Instead, take advantage of the campus gym. Many campuses have free or low cost gym memberships for students. The equipment may not be as good as a high-end gym, but you can’t beat the cost.

Be Careful with Meal Plans

Last, but not least, when selecting a meal plan, choose one that makes sense based on your eating habits. Some students automatically grab the highest plan, but that’s not always necessary. Also, when you do use your meal plan, make sure to get the best bang for your buck.

You don’t have to spend a lot of money this year. There are so many easy things you can do to save money on campus. This will give you more money for the things you really want and can help avoid the need for a full-time job.
