Saving Money on Dorm Room Stuff

Saving Money on Dorm Room Stuff

When you arrive to your dorm room, you’re going to be very disappointed. Most dorm rooms have a bed, desk, and dresser for each student. If you’re lucky, your dorm room will have only two students per room. Don’t let this lack of furniture and storage overwhelm you. There are ways to get everything you need without having to overspend. Let’s take a closer look at saving money on dorm room stuff.

Use What You Have

First things first. Chances are you already have twin-sized bedding – use it. There’s also a good chance you have a bedside table – bring it. A bedside table can over storage space on top and in the drawers. If you have organizational bins, you’ll want to bring those along as well. Remember not to bring anything too big as your dorm room can only hold so much and you will have to share the space.

Upgrade Thrift Store Finds

You want to look around thrift stores, flea markets, and yard sales for pieces that can be used to accessorize your room. Don’t let the color of accessories scare you. You can always use a can of spray paint to make everything match. As long as you like the shape and functionality of the piece, go for it.

Shop the Sales

You also want to shop the sales. Most discount department stores will have dorm room essentials on sale. This is where you’ll want to buy a foam mattress topper for that crappy dorm room mattress. This can make all the difference when it comes to getting a good night’s sleep. If you need bedding, this is also a great time to buy.

Think Outside the Box

Because you’re working in such a small space, you want to think about how things can be used in different ways. For example, an under-the-bed storage container can be used to hold all your dry foods or extra school supplies. You can usually fit two or three of these under a dorm room bed. Another great tip is to use decorative candle holders as pen or pencils storage. You can even attach a towel rod to the wall using Command strips and hang small planters off the towel rod to store small items, such as hairbands, makeup, and thumb drives.

Hit the Dollar Tree

Last, but not least, visit your local Dollar Tree. You’ll find so many awesome storage solutions for only a dollar. You’ll also find wall decals for decorating your room and you can even find Command hooks. There are so many awesome things to find that will make your dorm room feel more like home.

You don’t have to spend a fortune on dorm room supplies. There are so many ways to save money. Whether you start with what you already have or hit the Dollar Tree, you can get the stuff you need without overspending.
