How to Save Money Even If You Think You Don’t Have Enough

Saving money can be hard to do. And what if you don’t know where to start?  There more ways than you may have imagined to save money.  Here are some good ones to get you started:

  1. Use a budget app to track your spending

This could really open your eyes to where your money is going.  Do you really remember where you’re spending money?  There are several free apps available that will help you keep track of what you spent, where and even categorize the spending for you.  Prosper Daily – Money Tracker and Goodbudget are both great options.

  1. Money-saving apps like Walmart Savings Catcher and Ibotta

If you have a Walmart close by, they will price match other stores for you.  Just do your shopping at Walmart, scan your receipt using the Savings Catcher app and Walmart will search every store in your area for a better price.  If they find one, you get the difference back on a Walmart Gift Card which you can cash out at any time.  

Ibotta helps you get discounts and coupons on your everyday purchases.  Between the two apps, you can save a lot of money on your shopping.

  1. Shop at thrift stores for clothes.

Try Salvation Army, Goodwill and ThredUp.  Salvation Army and Goodwill have stores all over the country so you will probably find one very close to you.  Not only can you find good discounts on slightly used (sometimes brand new) items, but you’re also helping out your community.

ThredUp is an online thrift store that offers brand-name clothes for women and children. They also have great brand-name purses.

  1. Cut cable.

Try an online service like Hula, Amazon Prime or Netflix to catch up with your favorite shows and watch great movies.  Chances are a monthly membership with these services with save you over $100 a month on your cable bill.

  1. Cancel gym membership.

Gym memberships can be expensive; even more so if you don’t use them daily.  Instead, get some workout videos, try an online workout service, use a workout app, or go for a walk in your neighborhood.

  1. Eat leftovers.

Turn last night’s leftover dinner into today’s lunch.  Making just a little extra when preparing a meal with save you both time and money.  Repurpose last night’s tacos into a salad or wrap for lunch.  Even if you only have enough left over to pack one lunch, that’s one less lunch you have to buy.

  1. Don’t use expensive hair products.

Usually the expensive name brands are just the lesser expensive brands in a prettier bottle.  Brands like Suave and V05 have been around for decades and they do a great job.  They average about $3 a bottle and will give you the same result as a $15 bottle. (Even Better, brands like Suave are almost always FREE after coupon at least once a month!!)

Another savings tip when it comes to hair care . . . you probably don’t need as much as you’re using.  A silver dollar size amount is all you really need to get the job done.

Make a list and prioritize what you’re willing to cut out of your spending and what you’re not. Try making a few small changes at first and see how much you can live with.
