How to Quit Spending More Than You Make

So, you spend more than you make. You are not alone.  This seems to be a common practice for many people.

Credit card companies make it easier for you to spend and not worry about how much you have coming in.  It takes some discipline to live only on the money you make.  But if you ever want to experience financial freedom, you need to face this difficult task head on.

There is more than one way to start spending less. Listed below are some tips to help you make it happen.

  1. Believe That You Can.

This is probably the most important, because it is the belief that it is possible that will carry you through when it feels hard. Find people who have gone from overspending to living within their means and get encouraged by their stories. Seeing that it was possible for other people will help you to believe that it is completely possible for you.

Reread these stories when you get discouraged, it will help keep your spirits up. The motivation you gain from other people’s successes will keep you focused.  If you do not BELIEVE that you can do it, you are NOT going to make it.

  1. Eliminate Temptation.

Freezing your credit cards in a bowl of water or even cutting them up won’t be enough.  If you want to access them, you will still be able to.   The key is to eliminate temptation, at least while you are building the habit of spending less.

Stay away from malls, eat at home instead of going out, rent movies instead of going to the theater will you will be tempted to buy popcorn, candy and sodas. Wherever it is that you tend to spend money without thinking about it, stay away.

  1. Learn To Say “NO” To Yourself.

Learning to tell yourself NO is one of the most beneficial habits you can develop. Telling yourself NO in the beginning may be hard, but it will become easier the more you do it.

Your Success Is Based On Your Ability To Say NO.  Successful people keep their focus on what they want by saying NO to temptations.

If you want to lose weight, you have to say NO when you are craving that chocolate bar or milkshake.

If you want to succeed in your career, you have to say NO to your desire to be lazy instead of working hard.

If you want to get out of debt, you have to say NO to indulgences and impulse buys even when everyone around you has them.

By following these simple but challenging steps, you can get yourself out of debt and back to living within your means.
